ARC Mini Review: The Red by Tiffany Reisz

The Red
by Tiffany Reisz
Publisher: 8th Circle Press
Genre: Erotic romance
Release Date: July 11th, 2017
Rating: ★★★★
Goodreads | Kindle | B&N | iBooks | Kobo

Never make a promise you don’t intend to keep…

Mona Lisa St. James made a deathbed promise that she would do anything to save her mother's art gallery. Unfortunately, not only is The Red painted red, but it's in the red.

Just as she realizes she has no choice but to sell it, a mysterious man comes in after closing time and makes her an offer: He will save The Red if she agrees to submit to him for the period of one year.

The man is handsome, English, and terribly tempting...but surely her mother didn't mean for Mona to sell herself to a stranger. Then again, she did promise to do anything to save The Red...

The Red is a standalone novel of erotic fantasy from Tiffany Reisz, international bestselling author of The Bourbon Thief and the Original Sinners series.

Review:

OH MY GOD. Honestly, this book is going to stay with me for a long time because I've never read anything like it.

Now the story began with Mona, whose art gallery was on the verge of closing permanently because of its mounting debts, getting a visit from a mysterious older man who offered to save her gallery in exchange for her sexual submission. It sounded like your typical arrangement and I didn't think much of it, until the arrangement started and took me by surprise.

Honestly? I don't know how to review this properly without spoiling it because there are a lot of things I want to say about the plot but it's better to discover them on your own. What I truly love about The Red is how Tiffany weaved the plot around real art pieces. I know next to nothing about 19th century art so I had to google all the pieces before every chapter, and knowing the art pieces enhanced the enjoyment of the story. I love Mona a lot; she's so strong and unapologetic about her sexuality. I love her interactions with Malcolm, and I love how hot they are together. This whole book is just sexy from start to finish; I'm half in love with Malcolm myself by the end of it.

Overall, I've read a lot of erotic romance that they're starting to blend together, but The Red definitely stands out from the crowd. I've been steadily rereading it ever since I finished it the first time, and I don't think I'll stop anytime soon.

E-ARC is received thanks to the publisher via Netgalley.

Cover Reveal: Beard in Mind by Penny Reid

Hi guys! Today I'm really excited to share with you the cover for one of my anticipated August reads, Beard in Mind by Penny Reid. I'm a big fan of Penny's works; her characters are always so smart, funny, and realistic. I first fell in love with the Winston brothers when they were introduced in Beauty and the Mustache. We got to see them from the sole Winston sister, Ashley's perspective, and it was a riot. Without further ado, here's the cover for Beard in Mind, which is the 4th book in the Winston Brothers series, following Beau Winston and Shelly Sullivan (Quinn from Knitting in the City series' sister):

Beard in Mind, an all new standalone in the bestselling, romantic comedy Winston Brothers Series by Penny Reid, is coming August 1st!

All is fair in love and auto maintenance.

Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.
Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.

Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever.
She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words.

Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life.

The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most.

Review:

Lisa: I started Forbidden Promises right after finishing An Indecent Proposal, which is just an okay read for me, and got hooked almost from the get-go. Sloan was in the background in the first two O'Malley books so I was pleasantly surprised that she decided to take charge of her life and leave the O'Malley family in the third. The more I read about her, the more I love her. She was the quiet one in the family, the kind you didn't expect to do crazy things or rebel. I love how resilient she was, and how she's determined to make her own way. Jude at the beginning of the book was a broody asshole, which is obviously my type. What happened to him was tragic; I understood why he had a one-track mind and that is to avenge his family and eliminate the Sheridans. The tension between Jude and Sloan was off the charts, and I love how their relationship developed from sexual to something else bigger than the two of them had planned. I'm especially weak for the age gap (Jude was 11 years older than Sloan) and how Jude called her sunshine.

"You're my sunshine, and my world is fucking bleak without you."

Also worth mentioning is the buildup between Dimitri (who I surprisingly began to love; I loathed him in the second book but boy he's so annoyingly attractive) and Keira; it was so great I can't believe we're only getting their book next year. Aiden too has redeemed himself in my eyes; I can almost forgive his assholish treatment of Carrigan. Almost.

Can't wait for the next book!

Eri: I actually haven't read most of the other books in this series, but I knew some of the backstory with the mob families and such. Even without being too concerned with that part of the story, I really enjoyed Jude and Sloan as a pairing and both of the characters individually. Katee Robert always writes excellent chemistry and build-up; I was definitely fanning myself a lot during this book. I love that Jude calls her sunshine, for some reason that nickname hits a soft spot in my heart, and Sloan's inner strength was great to see, especially because she seems to be the quiet one in the O'Malley's series. Jude's dark past and the revenge that it fuels was sad to read about, especially as he keeps struggling between that and his growing attachment to Sloan. I love seeing when people are protective of their significant other and seeing mutual affection grow, although I will say because this book deals with mob families and other stuff, the romance can be a little fast-paced at times.

Also, I'm super intrigued by the two pairings we're going to get in the future books, particularly Dimitri and Keira, since they had some intense scenes together on the side.

Thank you to Forever and Netgalley for the review copy.

Blog tour + ARC review: Dating-ish by Penny Reid

Dating-ish
(Knitting in the City #6)
by Penny Reid
Genre: Contemporary romance
Release Date: May 16th, 2017
Rating: ★★★★
Goodreads | Kindle | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | Google Play

There are three things you need to know about Marie Harris: 1) She's fed up with online dating, 2) She's so fed up, she's willing to forego the annoyance and consider more creative alternatives, and 3) She knows how to knit.
After the most bizarre and irritating first date in the history of humankind, Marie is looking for an alternative to men. With the help of her friends, she quickly identifies a few possibilities:
Need a cuddle? Use a professional cuddler. Need affirmation? Get yourself a life coach. Need an orgasm? Try orgasm meditation! Why does she need the hassle of a romantic partner when she can meet all her needs with paid services?
But then her irritating date resurfaces. And he's not at all the person she thought he was. And he suggests a different--and crazier--solution to her dilemma . . .
As everyone knows (or will soon come to realize), traditional relations between humans are a thing of the past. Robots are our future. And if robots are our future, then why do we need other people at all?

Review:

Now I've always said that my favourite Knitting book is Beauty and the Mustache, and then Happily Ever Ninja came out. And now with Dating-ish, I guess I can say that all three of them are my favourite---I simply can't choose!

So yeah, I love this, as expected. I LOVE THIS A LOT. Here's some !!!!!! because it's that great. I've probably reread this 4-5 times after the first time because I kept thinking about it. I also cried a lot reading this for some inexplicable reason; Penny's other books never made me this weepy I want to write a long email to Penny demanding explanation for this phenomenon. Penny's books always invite her readers to think; I love the A.I. companion concept and the Nazi discussion, and whether or not human need for companionship can be replaced with paid services.

Now, wow, about Marie, where do I start? She intrigued me ever since she initiated the skinhead-baddies takedown in Neanderthal Seeks Human, and I find her even more awesome in Dating-ish. I relate to Marie so hard; I'm also looking for the Right Person but unlike Marie, I don't even bother to delve into online dating because...eh, men...but I digress. It's so easy to love Marie, and I admire her a lot for her genuineness, her open personality, and her courage to go outside her comfort zone and try new things (orgasm meditation, I can't even---). Also, I squealed when it's revealed that Marie's Abram's sister. I'm already so excited for the next Hypothesis book.

I liked Matt instantly when I met him in Happily Ever Ninja; dude is definitely me when it comes to food (though I don't really have the passion for coconut). I didn't even expect Penny to throw them both together. Disastrous first date aside, they just fit so well. I love their chemistry and banter, and how hot they are together.

Overall, Dating-ish has all the classic Penny Reid goodness: it's funny, smart, and entertaining, and I'm already hyped for Penny's next book.

As a part of the blog tour, here's an excerpt of Dating-ish (which is one of my favourite scenes off the book, yes):

EXCERPT

He was quiet for bit, we both were, and I felt myself relax more and more. His palm took a detour every so often, dutifully skipping my hip and sliding along my side, and then back to my leg. Soon, I was so relaxed I felt drowsy.
I felt fingers in my hair, moving the mass away from my neck with treasuring strokes just before Matt nuzzled the back of my neck, causing goosebumps to scatter over my skin.
“Mmm.” I smiled. “Hey. Jared said no tickling.” My voice sounded sleepy.
“Does this tickle?” Matt asked softly, nuzzling me again. I felt the brush of his lips—not a kiss, a brush—paired with hot breath against the bare skin of my neck and a zing shot straight down my spine, making my toes curl and a sudden hot ache twist in my lower belly.
Oh no.
I knew that ache. I hadn’t felt it because of another person’s touch in quite a long time. Nevertheless, no one ever forgets that ache.
My back arched instinctively, my bottom pressing back against his crotch, and I stiffened. I felt my nipples harden, strain beneath the cotton of my bra. I was now fully awake. No longer drowsy.
Nope.
Not even a little.
Matt stiffened, too. His movements abruptly ceasing.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong?” he asked, alarm coating his words, and in the next moment his hand was suspended in the air above me. “Did I touch something I shouldn’t?”
I exhaled a short, nervous laugh, gripped by the urge to sit up.
“No. No. You didn’t.” I moved to the edge of the bed, righting myself, away from Matt, needing distance. “I’m good.” I gathered a silent breath and released it slowly because my pulse was racing.
Crap, Marie. Get a grip. It’s Matt Simmons. Professor Matt. The big kid. Why are you reacting this way?
“Did I . . .” These initial words were hesitant, and a moment of silence stretched before he continued, his tone comically teasing as he finished his thought. “Did I arouse you?”
I snorted, shaking my head, laughing at his silly tone. Turning at the waist to peer at him over my shoulder, Matt was grinning at me, twisting a make-believe mustache between his thumb and forefinger.
But then he stopped.
“I did, didn’t I?” he pushed, his hand dropping. He looked pleased, if not a little amazed.
I sighed, feeling a smidge embarrassed, and nodded. “Actually, yes. That’s a sensitive spot for most women.”
“The back of your neck?” He lifted himself to one elbow, his eyes darting to my neck with keen interest.
“My neck in general, actually.”
“Huh.” Matt frowned thoughtfully. “Where else?”
I pressed my lips together and gave him an incredulous look. “I’m not telling you that.”
“Why not?”
“Matt.”
“What if I needed it for research reasons?”
“Matt.”
“What if I told you it was part of our questionnaire?” He tossed his legs over the side of the bed and stood, walking around to my side and offering me his hand. “You should give me a schematic of your body with the erogenous zones circled and rated.”
“Let me guess, you want them rated on a ten-point scale,” I deadpanned as I accepted his hand, stood, and stepped away to gain some distance and straighten my shirt.
He shrugged, crossing his arms, stalking after me. “Or exponential. I was going to say a Likert scale, but a logarithmic scale works, too.”
Chuckling, appreciative of his attempt to diffuse my embarrassment and awkwardness with the joke, I realized Matt Simmons wasn’t a bad guy. He might even be a good guy, just a little . . . peculiar.
And wants to replace romantic relationships with robots. Best not forget that detail.
Yeah, he’d make an interesting friend.
“Thanks.” I gave him a small smile.
“For what?” His eyes moved between mine.
“For the cuddle. Thanks for the cuddle, Matt.”
“Anytime, Marie.” He grinned down at me, his eyes dancing as he leaned forward and whispered, “Anytime.”

ARC Review: Walk of Shame by Lauren Layne

Walk of Shame
(Love Unexpectedly)
by Lauren Layne
Publisher: Loveswept
Genre: Contemporary romance
Release Date: April 18th, 2017
Rating: ★★★
Goodreads | Kindle | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | Google Play

Sparks fly between a misunderstood New York socialite and a cynical divorce lawyer in this lively standalone rom-com from the USA Today bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Love Story.

Pampered heiress Georgianna Watkins has a party-girl image to maintain, but all the shopping and clubbing is starting to feel a little bit hollow—and a whole lot lonely. Though Georgie would never admit it, the highlights of her week are the mornings when she comes home at the same time as her uptight, workaholic neighbor is leaving to hit the gym and put in a long day at the office. Teasing him is the most fun Georgie’s had in years—and the fuel for all her naughtiest daydreams.

Celebrity divorce attorney Andrew Mulroney doesn’t have much time for women, especially spoiled tabloid princesses who spend more time on Page Six than at an actual job. Although Georgie’s drop-dead gorgeous, she’s also everything Andrew resents: the type of girl who inherited her penthouse instead of earning it. But after Andrew caps one of their predawn sparring sessions with a surprise kiss—a kiss that’s caught on camera—all of Manhattan is gossiping about whether they’re a real couple. And nobody’s more surprised than Andrew to find that the answer just might be yes.

Review:

[Actual rating: 3.5]

Lauren Layne is one of my go-to authors, so I was really excited when I got approved for this on Netgalley that I ditched my school work and finished it on one sitting.

Now in hindsight I'm a bit confused as to why it is called Walk of Shame when there isn't really any walk of shame in it... Lots of walking, though... Walking aside, this is such a fun read! I especially love the way it read like a rom-com movie in my head.

Anyway, the reason why this book worked for me is the same reason why LL's books worked for me in the past: the characters. Georgie stole the show for me, I love her so much. She's kindhearted, easy to love, and she's a genuine ball of sunshine I want to squish and keep her forever. Mr. Love Interest, Andrew Mulroney (*cue Georgie voice* Esquire) is also entertaining to read despite his stoic ways. He's definitely the personification of the You Tried meme; boy just can't express himself without offending people, poor thing.

Their early morning banter are basically the highlights of this book, although I'm still horrified that Andrew is up and ready to go by 5 am (can't relate, Andy). I want to call their relationship enemies-to-lovers but I think they are not quite what you call enemies? It's more of Georgie wanting to get under Andrew's skin and crack him because he is so...stodgy? Either way, it's so fun to watch because everybody likes Georgie and then here is Andrew who keeps calling her ridiculous and rolling his eyes. I would take it as a personal challenge as well.

"I can't shake the sense that while maybe I don't need someone to need me, I really, really wouldn't mind spending time with someone who at least wants me."*

Also, I'm a big Disney buff, so I shared Georgie's obsession with the movie Enchanted. I really love the role the movie played in the book, especially in the end. I was in tears by the time I reached the ending. It really suits the whole HEA vibe this book had going, my hopeless romantic heart is thriving.

Not to forget, a special shoutout to Peter and Pam, Andrew's brother and sister in law for being awesome. I wish we had more of them. I love their little bit of HEA in the end (I cried, no surprise).

Overall, Walk of Shame has been a great stress reliever, and I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a quick, lighthearted read.

Cover Reveal: The Difference Between Us (Opposites Attract #2) by Rachel Higginson

Hey friends, today I'm here to help out with a cover reveal for Rachel Higginson, whose books I just love! This is the second book in the Opposites Attract series and I definitely recommend the first one, it's the perfect comfort read. I am so excited for this next book as well and the cover is just gorgeous too. Without further do, please scroll down so you can witness the cover in all its glory and the absolutely charming synopsis as well.

The Difference Between Us
(Opposites Attract #2)
by Rachel Higginson
Release Date: July 25th 2017
Genre: Contemporary romance
Goodreads | Kindle

I’m cursed.

At least when it comes to finding Mr. Right.

I’m tired of men that only want one night stands or blind dates that are nothing but awkward and uncomfortable. I’m tired of avoiding inappropriate text messages and the constant disappointment of always meeting Mr. Wrong.

After all these years of dates that lead nowhere, I can admit that it’s me. I’m the problem. I’m shy and picky and cursed. Definitely cursed.

So I’ve decided two things.

The first? I’m giving up dating and relationships and men in general. Maybe, possibly, forever.

The second? I’m going to have to try harder to avoid Ezra Baptiste.

If I couldn’t hack it in the kiddy pool of dating, I certainly can’t swim in his deep end. He’s too successful. Too intense. He’s all man when I’m used to nothing but boys pretending to be grownups. He’s everything I’m afraid to want and so far out of my league we might as well be different species entirely.

So he’ll need to find a different artist to paint his mural. And a different graphic designer to help him with his website. He’ll need to find someone else to glare at and flirt with and kiss.

It can’t be me.

We’re too different.

Thoughts, comments, opinions? I personally love the double exposure thing happening at the bottom and I know I'm going to enjoy this book so having a pretty cover is definitely winning some brownie points haha. Until next time,
